Introduction

Formic acid is miscible with water and most polar organic solvents, and has certain solubility in hydrocarbons. In hydrocarbon and gaseous state, formic acid appears in the form of dimer bound by hydrogen bond. In the gaseous state, hydrogen bonding leads to a large deviation between the equation of state of formic acid gas and ideal gas. Liquid and solid formic acid consists of continuous formic acid molecules bound by hydrogen bonds. Formic acid has the same properties as most other carboxylic acids, although formic acid usually does not produce acyl chloride or anhydride. Until recently, all attempts to convert formic acid into these derivatives ended in the product carbon monoxide. Formic acid is dehydrated and decomposed into carbon monoxide and water. Formic acid has reducibility similar to aldehyde. It can perform silver mirror reaction to reduce the silver ions in silver ammonia complex ions into metal silver, and it is oxidized into carbon dioxide and water. Formic acid is decomposed into CO and H2O under the catalysis of concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction equation is: HCOOH ====== CO + H2O formic acid with high concentration is easy to freeze in winter.
